A class of 19?? takes a moment to have one final picture made.

Ceremonies for the 1990 gradu-
ates was held on May 5, in the
Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center.
On this glorious day, not only was
the sun shining brightly in the sky,
but on the faces of the graduates.
This was the time to be proud of
their many accomplishments and
to say "I made it!"

Stepping across that platform
not only meant receiving their
diplomas, but closing a chapter in
their lives. They were leaving be-
hind the carefree innocence of
growth and moving forward to the
reality and responsibility of adult-
hood. Holding back the tears, they
made the time to remember their
years here at the Web.

Mike Loftis, Chuck Lynch, and Rhonda Fatten look to
Karen Martin for a smile for confidence.

Time to relax and think about "What comes next?"

Supporting the Best

The yellow ribbons placed around the campus were a part of
the nation's support for the troops in the Middle East. The ribbons
were tied to gates, doors, even'on car antennas. The ribbons on
campus were done by Jennifer Norman, Dawn Jestes, Karen
Martin, and Audrey Sloan. They will remain a part of our mem-
ories forever, because of the crisis" effect on each of us.

16 RIBBONS

Changing for the Best

Gardner- Webb has gone through many changes during the
1990-1991 school year. When the students returned in the
fall, we found a new look in the cafeteria. We now have the
option of eating on the mezzanine of the cafeteria, and look-
ing down to see everyone. Finally, there is room to enjoy
meals with a relaxed, less crowded atmosphere.

Renovations have also been going on in the rest of the
Dover Campus Center. Work has been done to make lounges
larger and more comfortable and office space accommodat-
ing for the staff.

We have a new way to see the stars, through our new ob-
servatory. The observatory will give the students a chance to
learn more about our universe.

Thanks goes to the fearless workers, both on the ground and many The Observatory. The closest we'll get to the stars,

steps up.

Friendships like these will last forever

Each August, Gardner- Webb College is floded
with freshmen students and their families. There is
plenty of excitement and nervousness. For most,
this is their first time away from home. However,
the friends and experiences from their college years
will be with them for the rest of their lives. They will
learn, and have fun, too.

Business Admin,

In the world we live in today, it
is almost a necessity to possess a
college education. Most high
school students plan their lives
around this goal. However, what
about those people who graduated
from high school several years
ago? Or even those who have a de-
gree that is not what they need to
achieve a better job?

These people get help through
the Gardner-Webb GOAL pro-

gram and graduate program. The
GOAL program allows adults to
attain a college degree through an
area community college, allowing
them to continue their jobs. The
graduate program offers upper-
level programs in classes ranging
from business to education to fine
arts.

Offering help to those who need
it is part of what Gardner- Webb
does BEST!

Tony McKnight

WAR RAGES IN THE PERSIAN GULF

On January 16, 1991 at 6:30 p.m. (EST), the war in the Per-
sian Gulf officially began. Allies dropped the first bombs on
Iraq as Americans were glued to their TV sets. Another gener-
ations of Americans was plunged into the realities of war.

The war hit Gardner- Webb just as hard as the rest of the na-
tion. In the fall, three Gardner- Webb students had already been
sent to the Middle East. Junior Tony McKnight, Sophomore
John Miller, and Senior Nancy Woollard were already there
and their well-being was on the minds of everyone who knew
them, and even those who didn't. Also in the minds of the
students were family members, such as Lynn Britt's husband,
Kenny.

The early reports of the war brought a sense of euphoria to
the people watching all three major networks and CNN for the
latest. The allied pilots were pounding Saddam Hussein's
forces, who were offering little resistance. Coverage was con-
tinuous through January 18 on all three networks, pre-empting
the regularly-scheduled programs.

But the war was just beginning. Iraqi SCUD missiles were
fired into Tel Aviv and Jerusalem in Israel and Riyadh in Saudi
Arabia. Most were shot down by American Patriot missiles,
but some hit their targets, with the threat of possible chemical
warheads .

The war continues with minimal American casualties, for
now. The Iraqis are trying different maneuvers from moving
tanks to along the Kuwaiti border to creating an oil spill in the
Persian Gulf and setting it afire. For Gardner- Webb, the con-
tinuing war brings more concern. Several members of the
GWC student body and staff face the task of being shipped to
the Middle East. Those include Dr. Frank Bonner, head foot-
ball coach Woody Fish, Dean Evan Thompson, Joe Hough,
and Marty White, and other students.

All we can do now is support our troops and pray for them,
for peace, for the world.

A Tradition of Excellence

Homecoming '90 — "A Tradi- ,
tion of Excellence" — began as
everyone returned from Fall Break
with "Skating at Kate's" on
Wednesday. Jill Galloway won in
the Blizzard of Bucks. Friday
brought the Creature from the
Black Lagoon in 3D. "The Hunt
for Green October" yielded Dan

Mauney and Kim Woodruff $50
after they figured out the clues and
found the money at the fire hydrant
near the chapel.

On Saturday, students, alumni,
faculty, and the community came
out for the parade and the football
game. The floats showed off the
creativity of Gardner- Webb's

students.

Halftime at the football game
was awaited with much anticipa-
tion. Lana Chambers was crowned
Homecoming Queen with a court
of Donna Pritchard, Mary Met-
calf, Angela Lamb, and Katie
Stallings. Homecoming '90 was a
memorable time for all.

The commuters got mto the parade this year.

owe STUDENTS BECOME ALCOHOL AWARE

In early October, Gardner-Webb held an
Alcohol Awareness Week to educate the
students on alcohol consumption and drinking
and driving. An awareness fair was held in the
concourse of the LYCC with several campus
groups having booths. A wrecked car sat out
front as a reminder of the cost of drinking and
driving. Mocktails were served inside and
M&m"s given to students as they took an
alcohol awareness quiz. Red ribbons were also
passed out at the fair and around campus.

The fair was a success. It is important to
know the facts and the Alcohol Awareness
Week helped to provide information on this dif-
ficult subject.

Rescue squad workers show the effects of drinking and dnving.

1991 saw the sesquicentennial celebration for
Cleveland County. Gardner- Webb got into thie act to
celebrate . . . literally.

Februar}' 21-25. the Gardner- Webb theatre pre-
sented "A Time for Singing. "" a play written by a
former professor about the birth of the college. C.
Robert Jones, who attended most of the per-
formances, wrote the play in 1980 in honor of the
75th anniversar\- of the college.

The play is the stor}' of 0. Ma.x Gardner and his
influence on the small struggling Boiling Springs
Junior College. He brings professor Phil Elliott into
the picture, who becomes the first president of the
newly-named Gardner-Webb College. The play
brought the history of the college to life.

The play was well received by Gardner-Webb
students and community people alike. It brought
back things many people had forgotten and gave the
-^1' 'dents insight as to what made the college and how
it began.

Round one begins between 0. Max Gardner (R. Shawn Lewis) and his
son Decker (Joe Houah).

The 1990 Gardner- Webb Col-
lege Soccer Team planted a firm
foundation in the future. The
team's strength was its ability to
score. This was enough to put
them 3rd in the district in scoring.

The ability to defend the goal
also took hold this season. The
team only allowed 41 goals as

duction of goals was the superb job
done by the goalkeeper.

ceived recognition for their ef-

Coach Setzer has been
pleased with the perfor-

team. The woman's sport is
"growing Hke wildfire" in
the region, and GWC is
already competitive. Kathy
Ayotte and Kelly Holland
made All District this year;
Dianne & Debbie Ford and
Ellen McCann made All
Conference.

Setzer expects continued
growth in the team but is
hampered in recruiting by a
lack of Scholarship money.
Carson-Newman and Win-
gate are expected to add the
sport, which drew more
fans this year than did the
men's version.

This year began with a restructuring of
the administration. Dr. Blackburn assumed
responsibility for academics, and Mr. Scott
accepted the task of guiding student devel-
opment, including athletics. Both are as-
sisted by Dr. Bonner, who provides leader-
ship in the two areas.

Mr. Dixon and Mr. Clan,' continue to
manage the public relations and financial
elements of the college.

We have seen a complete renovation of
the Dover Campus Center, improvements
in housing and grounds, and a continuation
of academic improvements. The Williams
Observatory opened, the Honors Program
grew, and we added several new athletic
Teams. Visitors are greeted by an improved
front entrance and new sign.

Dr. Blackburn maintains a high degree of in-
volvement in college life

The Future of Gardner-Webb

Dr. M. Christopher White spends
some rare deslc time in his relentless
effort to bring GWC financial sta-
bility and high visibility.

His goal is a complete and com-
petitive institution, in athletics and in
academics. Dr. White provides the
guidance and encouragement for the
Vice Presidents, who oversee the
daily operation of the college. The
major part of his time, however, is
consumed in development, repre-
senting GWC to the variety of people
and groups whose support provides
us with the resources that we need.

Tracy Jessup assists Dr. White with
grace and diplomacy.

Kitty Beds provides The Answer —
who. what, when, where and some-
times how.

Linda White often helps in design matters on campus. She is
responsible for many of the more pleasing arrangements in our
environment.

The Davis School of Nursing is a two year pro-
gram offering an Associate of Arts degree through
Gardner- Webb College. The school also offers a
program through an outside hospital to attain a
Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing for regis-
tered nurses and other upper level students.

The study is tough and the classes are difficult,
but for the student who is striving to be in the
health field, it is an opportunity that can't be
missed. The qualified staff prepares the nurses of
tomorrow in the classrooms today.

One of the most important assets we have for the future is our
children. To assure a good future, we must educate our children
today.

The education department of Gardner- Webb is dedicated to
producing the best teachers to prepare our children for the
future. By offering majors at both the elementary level and the
high school level, GWC is planning for all aspects of a child's
life. The basics are taught, from how to do a good bulletin
board to Fundamentals of Curriculum. With the proper con-
centration in the desired level, the teachers that we produce
today will be ready for any challenge presented to them. Not

We work each day to build our

about our past. If the ancient ori-
gins of the world or women's role
in history interests you, then Mrs.
Ellington's class is the one. If it's
presidents or the Civil War that

you like, then it's Eastman all the

about our government come from
Dr. Hambright. Mr. Jolley teaches
us about our society and how to

Advisor — Dr. Bill Stowe
Thanks:

Dr, Bill Stowe — for doing everything, being everything, and not giving up on us.
Security — for always making sure we're still alive over here at all hours of the night.
"Flounder" Lewis — for doing the directory twenty million times with twenty million

changes and a temperamental computer.
Tim Vaughan — for the pictures that we needed yesterday and forgot until today.
Elaine Ashley — for telling us who was doing what and where to find everyone.
Dr. Dan Proctor — for once again giving us a classification list of EVERYBODY.
Judy Walker, Dorethia Miller, & the entire Registrar's Office — for letting us bother you

over and over to get what we needed.
Miss Lillian and Miss Joyce — for trying to clean up after us when it was a hopeless cause.
Dawn Camp — for letting us use info from The Pilot to make things complete.
Michael Beshears — for saving me when 1 couldn't find any one else.
Nathan Alexander — for producing the pictures that no one else could get.
John Brock — for the pictures of the plays.
Lynn Britt — for the pictures and the help.

Holly, Kim and Julie — without you, 1 would have gone nuts long before; you kept me sane
and kept a few people from being strangled. Thanks.
